I get a lot of questions through tumblr and twitter about my illustration process. It’s usually difficult to answer because I try to change it up as much as I can, but my process typically involves drawing in pencil, redrawing in ink, scanning, and then drawing in photoshop with a wacom tablet and sometimes silkscreening the results.
Sometimes I don’t use a computer at all, sometimes I never touch paper, it just depends.
No matter what I am doing, I always draw in layers, as though I am building a silkscreen. My brain is hardwired like a printmaker and that’s my default mode. It helps me build colors and compositions through layering and reduction.
Here is an animated gif I made of a drawing I threw together just for fun. It started as a pencil sketch about 2 inches tall, and then I scanned in the pencil drawing and drew the colors as separate layers in photoshop. I think this would be a pretty cool silkscreen, so I might print it at like 18x14 inches. We shall see.
Thanks for looking!
