Napoleon Maze in THE GOODS

Here’s a scan of what the Napoleon Maze looked like printed in Issue 28 of THE GOODS. As it appeared in the SF Chronicle. Thanks to Riley for cross-country newspaper delivery!

McSweeney's Delivers THE GOODS

Have you seen THE GOODS yet? As described on their site, “The Goods is a gallimaufry of games, puzzles, comics, and other diversions, appearing in newspapers across the U.S. and Canada.” Past contributors include Adam Rex, Bob Shea, Brian Biggs, Carson Ellis, and now…me.

I was very happy to be asked to illustrate an activity for this week’s issue, and I was ecstatic when they approved my idea - A MAZE ABOUT NAPOLEON!!!

I am a huge nerd for French history, specifically anything to do with The French Revolution or Napoleon and was very excited to work on this assignment. The maze itself is in the shape of a bicorne hat, with which Napoleon is often associated. The obstacles throughout the maze are specific to his life and are explained in the little bio I wrote up with help from THE GOODS Editor, Mac Barnett, and J. David Markham, author of NAPOLEON FOR DUMMIES and several other great books.

Check out the maze in today’s issue of The San Francisco Chronicle! Call your local newspaper and tell (the features editor) that you want THE GOODS!

Can you spot the Bowie reference? Click here to view the maze larger on flickr.

And here’s the bio:

SCBWI Art Showcase Honor Award (again!)

Last weekend I was in LA for the 40th Annual Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Conference. I was lucky enough to win an Illustrator Honor Award and was happy to see talks by Judy Blume, Jon Scieska, Norton Juster and many other talented people. It was a great time and I highly recommend checking out to learn more about the organization and the other conference they do in NY in January.

These little  ships are a small part of a much larger illustration that I can’t post quite yet…
